So, the 12 MP sensor of the wide-angle module is increased from the iPhone 1,22 μm to the iPhone X y to 1,4 μm (the more, the better) for the new generation. As with the previous model, the image gets to the sensor via 6-lens optics with f / 1.8 aperture (the smaller, the better). The second camera with a telephoto lens, which has a sensor with a pixel size of 1,0 μm and 6 lens optics with a f / 2.4 aperture, did not undergo changes either. Both lenses have optical stabilization.
More noticeable software changes. In HDR mode when shooting a still image, the camera creates a variety of images in a buffer with different exposures, which ensures that there is no delay in this shooting mode. Moreover, thanks to this technology, iPhone XS Max is capable of displaying HDR images in real time when previewing. The result for the photo test in 110 balls consists of the results of a series of tests for analyzing various indicators in different lighting conditions. Let's see what these tests are and what they showed.
Exposure and contrast (93)
New Smart HDR function copes with its task. As a result, the iPhone XS Max has excellent exposure and dynamic range in bright light and indoors. Thanks to a more powerful processor, the device is capable of displaying an HDR image in real time in previews. So you see in the viewfinder the same thing that you get in the photo. As far as we know, there is no such possibility on the smartphones of other manufacturers.
In these examples, you can see a significantly improved range compared to the iPhone X on bright and dark areas of the frame. Huawei P20 Pro provides slightly higher detail in bright areas, but overall the image is flatter and the contrast is lower.
Dynamic range enhancements are even more evident in backlit portrait scenes. The iPhone XS Max delivers greater detail to the brighter background than the iPhone X. The current leader, Huawei P20 Pro, provides the same wide dynamic range.
In scenes with high contrast, the iPhone perfectly minimizes the clipping of bright areas of the frame and provides highly detailed shadows. Exposure during studio shooting at a very low light level (1 Suite) produced slightly underexposed, but quite suitable photos. In this test, the iPhone manifests itself at the level of leaders.
In terms of color rendition, the iPhone XS Max performs well, producing rich and pleasant colors during the day in the air or under artificial light indoors.
However, there is a slight unsaturation when shooting in low light. This is noticeable in the night scenes. Huawei P20 Pro and Galaxy Note 9 give more vivid colors compared to the iPhone.
A yellowish tint is periodically observed when shooting outdoors in bright light or with artificial lighting in rooms. Before this effect was observed on the iPhone X, but in this case it is more pronounced. This shade usually does not cause problems and is within acceptable limits.
Autofocus on the iPhone XS Max works very well, receiving a high rating. It acts quickly and accurately in any light and is stable. Focus allows you to get clear images with a minimum delay in 500 ms after defocusing the camera.
Textures (74) and noise (68)
In this section, the iPhone XS Max also achieved good results by applying a balanced approach to these two interdependent parameters of photo quality. This approach works particularly well in bright light. As you can see in the examples, the iPhone perfectly conveys the detail of the hair and the texture of the wall, coping well with digital noise. In this regard, it slightly exceeds the iPhone X and Pixel 2 XL.
Detailing in a typical indoor lighting is good enough, but not as clear as that of the Huawei P20 Pro. Noise begins to appear, the detail drops. Google Pixel 2 also produces clearer images in this light.
The difference between devices is even more obvious in low light. If you look at the pictures, the level of detail on all three devices is similar, but the Huawei P20 Pro and Galaxy Note 9 do better with digital noise. On the iPhone, its more.

There is another advantage that has not been tested in this case, but which can be seen. Due to the increased reading speed of the sensor, the effect of a sliding shutter when panning is not as intrusive as on some competing smartphones. You can see that the vertical lines on the Pixel 2 and Galaxy Note 9 devices are much more slanted.
When shooting at a speed of 30 frames / sec, the dynamic range is noticeably better than the iPhone X. This reduces blue shift artifacts. As with taking photos, flashes of different colors are sometimes observed.
At 60 frame / s, stabilization is as effective as 30 frame / s. But there is no extended dynamic range, and you also have to put up with a blue offset. For example, it can be seen on the 6 second.
